Artistic influences and background

Nature and the landscape have been an enduring love throughout my life. I find great inspiration in the colours, textures and atmospheres of the landscape and these feed directly into my images. I often create images from direct observation of a place, flower or animal and then more recently have been adding intuitive decoration to it to adorn and frame the piece.  I enjoy adding elements that bring a unique quality to the images.

I either work in the studio from sketches and photos taken in the landscape as the basis for new work or I take materials out into the landscape to work directly from observation of the scene. When working outside, I either draw, paint or take printmaking materials with me, capturing something of the atmosphere and weather conditions as well as the appearance of the scene. It is very exciting and inspiring to work in the environment sketching and painting.

My main artistic influences are the Modernists of the early Twentieth Century including Klee, Braque, Matisse, Mondrian, Nolde, Kandinsky and Schwitters and the St Ives School of painters and sculptors. I love the early 20th Century artists Eric Ravillious, Edward Bawden and Eric Slater. I am also inspired by contemporary artists such as Howard Hodgkin, Harvey Daniels, Melita Denaro, James Naughton, Elizabeth Blackadder and Peter Blake.
